SQL Saturday #99 – Wrap up

Planning

SQLSaturday #99 was last Friday (11/11/11) and man it was really great to be a part of it.  I told many people that, for the preparation, I did very little work and spent most of my time learning from Jason Strate and Dan English on what needs to be done for an event such as this.  Dan and I were in charge of the sponsors – I sent a few emails to a few people.  What really happened was I’d get an email that would have a question that I thought I could answer, by the time I actually started to type a respond, Dan had sent at least one very good response.  He would answer the original question, ask a follow up question and make a few suggestions to help the sponsor/potential sponsor – I couldn’t add much value to most of them.  It was great to learn from him.  Tim Plas, Steve Hughes and Bill Preachuk did a great job on all the other details as well.

My Sessions:

SQL Community and Social Networking –Roundtable

I had the privilege of being on a panel with Dan English (T), Jason Strate (T), and Steve Hughes (T) for the “SQL Community and Social Networking –Roundtable” Session.  The moderator was Ted Krueger (T), so it was a very fun group.  Jason’s videos were a hit.  Unfortunately Ted was not wearing his sun glasses, so not many people recognized him – joking of course.

Here are some useful links from the session:

TSQL Tips and Tricks

This was my first full fledged technical session – and I thought it went well – no major issues with the demos, I did forget to mention the drag and drop features of SSMS (drag and drop columns from the object browser rather than use select * For that matter drag and drop object names of all types to prevent mistyping), but I did cover the material and I didn’t run out of stuff.

Click here to download the presentation with the demos.

Here are the links I mentioned during the session that I would post:

One more thing…the guy who asked me about turning off a trigger for a transaction, I came up with a potential solution…you have to alter the trigger and add a table to the database, so if you can’t do that, you don’t have to read the rest of this.  If you can do that…you may be able to add a new table, and in the trigger you that you want to turn off, add some logic checking for the existence in of the ID in the new table – if the record doesn’t exist, execute the trigger, if it does, skip the trigger.  That way you could just insert records to table when you don’t want to execute the trigger and remove them when you are done.  You also keep transactional consistency by not turning off the trigger for the entire table.  Just a thought, hope it helps.

The Creepy DBA, How to Stalk Your Users

Jason Strate, Digineer

Do you know when your users are using the production login accounts from their workstations?  Are you aware of changes being made to the development servers that may impact future deployments?  Has the new Junior DBA start giving out access like candy?  As DBAs, we are responsible for knowing and acting on all of this and much more.  Fortunately, SQL Server provides a number of features that you can use to monitor and track user activity.  In this session, we’ll look at these features and demonstrate how you can use them to the extent that your users find you creepy!

Jason Strate (B/T), Digineer Inc, is a DBA with over fifteen years of experience. He is a recipient of the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) for SQL Server since July, 2009. His experience includes design and implementation of both OLTP and OLAP solutions as well as assessment and implementation of SQL Server environments for best practices, performance, and high availability solutions. Jason is a SQL Server MCITP and participated in the development of Certification exams for SQL Server 2008.

Notes on PASSMN July 2011 Meeting

Last Tuesday was the July 2011 PASSMN Meeting – Ask the Experts.  I got this great idea during the meeting to write up my notes with all the links to the web sites referenced.  I took good notes and that night I got home and after my family went to bed I was going to start typing them up.  Then I saw this:

Dan English (Blog/Twitter) beat me to the punch, and not only did he beat me to the punch, he did a much better job than I would have.  Thank you Dan!

11 Pages that Changed the World

Mark Knutson, Hennepin Faculty Associates

In 1970, the widely implemented database products were based either on a network or an inverted tree structure. E. F. Codd, an IBM research mathematician, presented a paper to the Association of Computing Machinery proposing a database management system based on mathematical objects called relations.

Mark will briefly review the topical coverage of the paper, including the formal definition of a relation. Mark will also place the paper in historical context and review how IBM’s response to it shaped the DBMS product landscape that we see today.

The discussion will be led by Mark Knutson who began his career programming IBM mainframes. Mr. Knutson is now programming team lead and database administrator at Hennepin Faculty Associates (The doctors of Hennepin County Medical Center), presiding over a modest, but fully up to date, SQL Server system.

Presentation:

NoSQL

Dan McCreary

This presentation will discuss the "NoSQL movement", a new set of data solutions that leverage non-relational data stores. These data stores are frequently designed to leverage thousands of commodity processors, are "schema free", use simple key-value stores or document stores and are often associated with web-scale "BigData" challenges.  This presentation will cover the key business factors and technology issues driving this movement.

Dan McCreary is a Minneapolis-based data consultant with a focus on helping organization use innovative technologies.  Dan has over 25 years experience in the IT industry including working for Bell Labs and Steve Jobs at NeXT computer, and is an "invited expert" of the world-wide web consortium.  Dan was the founder of Eagan-based Integrity Solutions which employed over 75 people before being sold to Vance Opperman’s KeyTech.  Dan has also consulted for many Minnesota organizations including the CriMNet project, the BCA, the Department of Pubic Safety, the Department of Education, the Department of Revenue, Thrivent Financial and Syntactica.  Dan is currently working on projects for the US Department of State, NueMeta and JPMorgan. He has a BA in Physics from Carleton College and a MSEE from the University of Minnesota
