The Creepy DBA, How to Stalk Your Users

Jason Strate, Digineer

Do you know when your users are using the production login accounts from their workstations?  Are you aware of changes being made to the development servers that may impact future deployments?  Has the new Junior DBA start giving out access like candy?  As DBAs, we are responsible for knowing and acting on all of this and much more.  Fortunately, SQL Server provides a number of features that you can use to monitor and track user activity.  In this session, we’ll look at these features and demonstrate how you can use them to the extent that your users find you creepy!

Jason Strate (B/T), Digineer Inc, is a DBA with over fifteen years of experience. He is a recipient of the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) for SQL Server since July, 2009. His experience includes design and implementation of both OLTP and OLAP solutions as well as assessment and implementation of SQL Server environments for best practices, performance, and high availability solutions. Jason is a SQL Server MCITP and participated in the development of Certification exams for SQL Server 2008.

Notes on PASSMN July 2011 Meeting

Last Tuesday was the July 2011 PASSMN Meeting – Ask the Experts.  I got this great idea during the meeting to write up my notes with all the links to the web sites referenced.  I took good notes and that night I got home and after my family went to bed I was going to start typing them up.  Then I saw this:

Dan English (Blog/Twitter) beat me to the punch, and not only did he beat me to the punch, he did a much better job than I would have.  Thank you Dan!

Presentation:

11 Pages that Changed the World

Mark Knutson, Hennepin Faculty Associates

In 1970, the widely implemented database products were based either on a network or an inverted tree structure. E. F. Codd, an IBM research mathematician, presented a paper to the Association of Computing Machinery proposing a database management system based on mathematical objects called relations.

Mark will briefly review the topical coverage of the paper, including the formal definition of a relation. Mark will also place the paper in historical context and review how IBM’s response to it shaped the DBMS product landscape that we see today.

The discussion will be led by Mark Knutson who began his career programming IBM mainframes. Mr. Knutson is now programming team lead and database administrator at Hennepin Faculty Associates (The doctors of Hennepin County Medical Center), presiding over a modest, but fully up to date, SQL Server system.

Presentation:

NoSQL

Dan McCreary

This presentation will discuss the "NoSQL movement", a new set of data solutions that leverage non-relational data stores. These data stores are frequently designed to leverage thousands of commodity processors, are "schema free", use simple key-value stores or document stores and are often associated with web-scale "BigData" challenges.  This presentation will cover the key business factors and technology issues driving this movement.

Dan McCreary is a Minneapolis-based data consultant with a focus on helping organization use innovative technologies.  Dan has over 25 years experience in the IT industry including working for Bell Labs and Steve Jobs at NeXT computer, and is an "invited expert" of the world-wide web consortium.  Dan was the founder of Eagan-based Integrity Solutions which employed over 75 people before being sold to Vance Opperman’s KeyTech.  Dan has also consulted for many Minnesota organizations including the CriMNet project, the BCA, the Department of Pubic Safety, the Department of Education, the Department of Revenue, Thrivent Financial and Syntactica.  Dan is currently working on projects for the US Department of State, NueMeta and JPMorgan. He has a BA in Physics from Carleton College and a MSEE from the University of Minnesota

SSIS: The DBA Multiplier

Ted Krueger, Magenic Technologies

Ever wanted to create clones of yourself to get all your work done faster? I will demonstrate how SSIS can help you perform your DBA tasks as if there were more than one of you. You will leave the session knowing how to use SSIS to automate tasks such as performance monitoring above (and below) the normal health checks and transporting databases from one environment to another. This presentation will not only start ideas on how SSIS can help you daily as a DBA but as a Developer, we’ll see just how SSIS can be controlled conditionally so the outcome becomes much more than static imports and exports. We’re going to take SSIS and make it a standard tool for your administrative tasks and development tools!

Ted Krueger has been working in development and database administration for over a decade. Ted currently works for a respected consulting company, Magenic Technologies as a valued Database Professional resource. He is a PASS Region Mentor, Friends of Red Gate member and community mentor. Specialties range from High Availability and Disaster / Recovery setup and testing methods down to custom assembly development for SQL Server Reporting Services. Ted blogs and is also one of the founders of LessThanDot.com technology community. High Availability & DR Options for SQL Server

A comparison of SQL HA & DR options, by a practitioner who has implemented & managed all the SQL HA and DR approaches (& various combinations thereof). Tim is an operational DBA, charged with keeping SQL servers up & running & optimized, for managed-services customers. We will compare trade-offs between the various SQL HA & DR options: for complexity, usability, hardware requirements, licensing, failover speed, initial costs, ongoing support costs, staff skill requirements, etc.

Also, as you may be aware, Microsoft has announced a set of very powerful “AlwaysOn” features for the upcoming version of SQL (“Denali”), features popularly referred to as “HADRON” (“High Availability Disaster Recovery always ON”). We’ll provide a brief overview of those features now, and will have a full presentation on that later in the year.

Tim Plas is a Principal Consultant at Virteva, in Mpls. His current focus areas are operational-DBA services, storage, cloud computing, & providing level-3 escalation support for IT managed services. Previous specialties in his 25+ years in the IT field have covered Citrix/TS (app hosting), LAN’s / WAN’s / network security, DB architecture, systems analysis & design, app development, systems-level programming, & various IT mgmt roles. Tim has held a variety of MS certifications since 1994.
